Report: Men Spend More Than Women Online

Women have this reputation for doing more shopping. But according to the 2015 Sensis e-Business Report, it’s the men who do more of the spending online. It’s because men spend primarily on electronics and video games, which are more expensive than the items women typically buy online (clothing, cosmetics, books, groceries). In 2014, guys spent an average of $6,500 online. That figure is 2.7 times more than the ladies’ average expenditure of $2,400 within a similar time frame.

1,000 Australian small and medium businesses (SMBs) and 800 Australian consumers were the subjects of the study. The survey also revealed that 61% of males and 62% of females made online purchases in the past year and that Australians spent an average of $4,400.

“It’s interesting to see traditional stereotypes playing out in online purchases. Men are buying more video games and take-away food while women are buying more groceries and cosmetics,” said Sensis commercial director Rob Tolliday.
